There has been a lot of hulabaloo about the safety of Borax – and since it is an ingredient we use in some of our product formulations – we thought we’d put our two cents in.
Here’s What You Need To Know:
First, it is important to understand that there is a difference between sodium borate and boric acid : they are both comprised of boron, and have similar properties (learn more about that here). Much of the debate on blogs out there seems to confuse the two as interchangeable, they are not.
Second, the Laundress uses a refined form of natural sodium borate in selected formulations, in concert with other natural ingredients such as enzymes, oils, plant-based surfactants and oxygen bleach alternatives (Want to know what “oxygen bleach” really means? Click Here.)
For the record – we do not use harmful chemicals such as Volatile Organic Compounds, phosphates, phthalates or petroleum based surfactants.
But back to Borax.
There are risks involved with everything, from table salt to borax to bleach, and we all do our best to minimize risk while maximizing utility. The Laundress products are specially formulated to be safe and nontoxic. The Borax Decahydrate found in our Wash & Stain Bar, the All-Purpose Bleach Alternative and our well loved detergents is actually less toxic than both bleach and table salt.
So – Have No Fear and Happy Laundering!

The Laundress team recently volunteered for the Sandy relief efforts with our favorite charity partner, Baby Buggy. With so many centers in need, the crew helped organize, inventory and pack up items for the much-needed shelters impacted by the storm. Along with their larger outreach programs, Baby Buggy is also focused on providing the devastated areas with donated baby supplies, clothing, personal care products, etc. that help the youngest victims of the storm and their families.Read More
Here at the Laundress, we have been touched by the devastation Sandy has caused. Coworkers, friends and family alike have been displaced, some to greater effect than others. We reached out to our favorite nonprofit – and ongoing partner – Baby Buggy to find out what we all can do to help our neighbors and compatriots recover from this brutal natural disaster. For those of you outside the NYC area – Please take note of the first and third opportunities to help. Your aid will be invaluable in aiding those families most directly hit by this “perfect storm.”Read More
