Established New York City-based photographer Stan Wan went from becoming a doctor to reveries of capturing the world through a camera. With his work gracing everything from the pages of Elle, to the campaigns of Sephora, to TheLaundress.com, Stan has worked with some of the most recognizable brands, names, and faces across several industries. We go behind the lens with the great Stan Wan to get up close and personal, covering everything from his favorite location to shoot to his upcoming “mancation” plans!
When I’m on set at a photoshoot, I like to listen to… it depends on the shoot. For beauty, I’ll play an array of sexy jazz; for fashion, I’ll put on pop music; and when on set for The Laundress, I’ll wait to sense the mood. We’ve played everything from Middle Eastern tunes to Snoop Dogg!
My favorite model to photography is/was… a beautiful newcomer. They are just starting out, so these women tend to be fresh, void of existing modeling habits, and easy to direct. When your subject is not famous, it’s more about the photograph than the model.
The artist or photographer who has influenced me most is… American fashion and portrait photographer Richard Avedon impacted me greatly while in college, and American fashion photographer and filmmaker Bruce Weber influenced me later on in my career.
My next “mancation” will be spent… with eight buddies (and our wives) on a couples trip to the Desert Trip festival in Indio, California. We’ll be rocking out to The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, Roger Waters, and The Who.
My favorite thing in my home garden is… my lawn, but it’s a love-hate relationship. I have a large lawn and I love it when it’s green, but I often get weird grasses and brown spots that I have to deal with.
The Laundress product I love is… the Classic collection. I’m a utilitarian guy, so things get dirty and smelly. I love Fabric Fresh Classic, the Signature Detergent, and I can’t live without the Wash & Stain Bar.
When I’m not working, I am… trying to play guitar, gardening, or working on my car. I am also addicted to Facebook. I am always posting on Facebook and sharing images, thoughts, connecting with friends, and more.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
After receiving a manual film camera from his father at age 12, Stan Wan’s world was forever changed. Bound for medical school with a degree in Zoology from UC Berkley, Stan ultimately could not deny his passion for photography. Come graduation, he packed his bag and his camera and headed to New York City.
After five years in New York City assisting and freelancing for renowned fashion photographers Gosta Peterson, Deborah Turbeville, William Connors, and Albert Watson on set for Revlon, Glamour, Vogue, Mademoiselle, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Brides, and more, Stan set out for Europe in 1979 to make a name for himself… and that he did! Living in London, Milan, and Paris, Stan’s photos graced the pages of major European publications, including Elle, Depeche Mode, Vogue Paris, Amica, Gazia, Marie France, and Linea Italiana. Stan returned to the Big Apple in 1984 and evolved to commercial still life work, including many of the images you see for Sephora. Stan extended his photography passion teaching at Hofstra University since 2011 in addition to his work, including bringing The Laundress product and dedication to laundry home cleaning to life!
